Muslim Community Center
of Portland

aia merit award winner

Designed collaboratively by former Partners David Suttle, Garrett Martin, and Dave Hurley and the 2009 AIA MERIT AWARD winner, the Muslim Community Center of Portland offers a new building type for Oregon’s longest extant Islamic society, a group noted for 40 years of social outreach and interfaith reconciliation.

Planned around four key traditional elements—qibla, prayer, wudu, and community, the building expresses modesty and utility with folding masonry walls at once protecting and revealing, their combination of strength and delicacy honoring a rich heritage of Islamic building.

This project was done when Dave was a principal with Architecture Office, LLC in Portland, Oregon.
