The simple geometry and polished craft of traditional Japan are points of departure for this modern Izakaya restaurant in Northeast Portland.

Like the food served, familiar elements are recast into new combinations while remaining true to their craftsmanship and natural materials. A palette of low wood soffits, rich mahogany surfaces, simple terra cotta tile and carefully balanced lighting create zones of warmth and intimacy in a formerly cavernous garage, filtering a relaxed flow of spaces from the street to an inner courtyard with an open kitchen at its center.
