KTHF Cultural Heritage Learning Center

Kake, ak

Located between the SEARHC clinic and the World’s Tallest Totem Pole, the Kake Tribal Heritage Learning Center will be situated on the south facing cliff side, overlooking Keku Strait and Frederick Sound. The structure is set to be a two-story traditional Tlingit looking wood structure. This Cultural Heritage Learning Center is envisioned to provide a large community gathering space that encourages the preservation of indigenous culture, language, and history, a workshop space that will support Alaska Native arts, subsistence, and other educational programming.

Situated in Ḵéex’ Khwáan land, the views and the proximity to the world’s tallest totem, the center evokes the sense of the longevity of the Tlingit people who have lived here since time immemorial. The basis of design begins by looking at the traditional clan houses of the Tlingit people that used to sprinkle the coasts of Southeast Alaska. Tlingit clan houses used to serve as multipurpose structures that were utilized by the community for sleeping, ceremonies, education, and storage. The clans would live with multigenerational extended families in these houses. The Cultural Heritage Learning Center will utilize this form as it will serve the community of Kake in providing a space for cultural education and ceremony.
