Point House Restoration

Sitka, ak

The Point House has been designed for the Kiks.ádi X’aaká Hít on Katlian Street in the Sitka Indian Village of Sheet’ká to replace their clan house that was torn down in the 1980’s. This 2-1/2 story structure reflects the Craftsman building style of an earlier version of the Point House combined with traditional clan house elements. The building will have a primary gathering space with storage for the clan’s at.oow along the perimeter of the room. A central lowered portion reflects the multileveled platforms found in Tlingit clan houses. The future interior house screen separates the open gathering space from a small commercial kitchen and accessible bathroom toward the back of the house. The second floor will have single occupancy bedrooms for elders and a bunk room for other clan members to stay in, all serviced by a common bathroom. The third floor will have housing for the Hít S’aatí (house master) and an additional caretakers unit. The dense residential plan acts as a perfect place for clan members of the house to be able to stay at during khoo.éex’ and other cultural events in Sitka.
