Intended to set the standard for pediatric care environments in Southeast Alaska, the eight operatory facility, inclusive of two orthodontia operatories is designed so that each patient space is visually engaging, auditorily isolating and calming. Interior finishes were selected, and art specifically created to establish design themes reflective of local, natural environments or phenomena familiar to and beloved by our young patients. Dental equipment selection and layout within each operatory were also done with the strategy of minimizing the otherwise mechanized, clinical experience of a typical exam room, placing instruments and med-gas systems out of patients’ field of view. Natural light was prized, however being on the ground floor, view into and out of the existing windows was undesirable so the custom art in the form of translucent graphic overlays, was applied across them pleasantly filtering and coloring light, blocking views and maintaining patient privacy.
